I am a UK national, now living in Europe, having spent my career working in financial services. I have been fortunate enough to work alongside some of the best business and risk professionals from around the world, as well as managing risk during some of the most turbulent times in recent history, particularly during the global financial crisis and the coronavirus pandemic.
It was during the global financial crisis that a great mentor said to me: 'what you learn during one-year of crisis, will be more useful to your career than what you learn during 10-years of good-times.' This mantra still resonates with me even today.
But this doesn't mean that managing risk in your business should be intimidating and it certainly shouldn't be overly complicated. More importantly, effective risk management should guide people towards making informed decisions - and never invoke fear, create confusion or lead to inertia.
With over 20-years experience working in financial services, I have held roles as an Executive Director, Chief Risk Officer and board member across Europe, in global financial services companies and FinTech's. I have also been a regulatory approved person by the European Central Bank.
